Wanted (2009) - Movie Preview

The plot of the flick revolves around the character of Radhe(Salman Khan), who is not only a sharp shooter but also hates any kind of authority. Radhe has a very sharp mind and can understand the mechanism of dubious underworld in seconds. This quality makes him favorite of Gani Bhai( Prakash Raj), the dreaded gangster for whom he works.

Though Radhe works for Gani Bhai, he is not his slave and works on his own terms and conditions. However, Gani Bhai is a shrewd gangster and uses Radhe to eliminate most of the rival gangsters from the city of Mumbai.

In this process of eliminating Gani Bhai’s enemies, Radhe unwittingly makes every other gangster his enemy. However, Radhe is taken aback when Janhvi (Ayesha Takia) expresses her fondness for him instead of fearing or hating him for his crimes.

On the other hand, Inspector Talpade (Mahesh Manjrekar), who is a corrupt police officer, has his lustful eyes on Janhvi, without knowing the fact of her liking for Radhe. Jahnvi’s timid nature also encourages Talpade to make unwanted advances towards the beautiful lass.

In the meantime, a war for the control of Mumbai underworld has begun. Every gang from Golden gang to Data Pawale’s gang wants to control the maximum area of the city, and this result in bloody gang war. The whole of Mumbai suffers due to this, and bloodshed, murder becomes order of the day.

Commissioner Ashraf Khan(Govind Namdeo) vows to clean the city of these bloody wars and gangsters. He starts with the arrest of two hundred criminals on the first day.

Amidst this entire hullabaloo, a twist in the storyline sees Salman Khan becoming the most wanted man in Mumbai. The police want his cooperation and information to eliminate criminals, while gangsters want him to kill because he can spill the beans and harm them.

What happens to Radhe and Mumbai forms the rest of the film.

PERFORMANCE

The film belongs to macho man Salman Khan all the way. His performance in the character of Radhe looks much like the extension of his real personality, and less the role in a make- believe movie. His depiction of maniac anger like a ferocious lion has come on screen so fabulously that the hoi polloi will go ga ga over it.

Salman Khan has excelled in enacting action sequences in the flick, especially so in the last half an hour of the flick, where he beats baddies black and blue. These sequences would remind the audiences of Aamir Khan’s raw action sequences in ‘Ghajini’, which had made that flick a treat to watch on the big screen.

Ayesha Takia Azmi, who plays the character of Jahnvi, has made the character look like straight out of 1980s movies, when heroines were supposed to look not only innocent, but also to a certain extent naïve.

Ayesha Takia perfectly looks like that in the flick, especially in the sequences where she is romancing the handsome hunk Salman Khan, who plays the part of a die hard gangster.

Mahesh Manjrekar, who plays the part of a lustful Inspector Talpade, is perfect for the role. It seems he has come a long way from his days in ‘Kaante’, where his acting was more or less monotonous.

Prakash Raj, who enacts the part of Ghani Bhai, is excellent in his venom spewing villainous character. Even, Govind Namdeo, who plays the part of Commissioner, comes out with flying colors.

However, same can not be said about veteran bollywood actor Vinod Khanna. But this is not his fault, as he hardly gets any scope in the flick to show his histrionics. Mahek Chahal provides oomph factor to the flick. Aseem Merchant, Raju Mavanai, Prateeksha Lonkar etc have provided able support to the main cast of the film.

The direction of Prabhu Deva shows that the southern dancing sensation has no intention of directing a path breaking or something special flick. In fact, he has opted for his debut in bollywood a hard core masala flick with Salman Khan.

However, it does not mean that Prabhu Deva has not executed the scenes with finesse. In fact, he has done so with every sequence but it is more visible in action and stunt sequences involving Salman Khan. Sometimes, Prabhu Deva’s purpose seems to be presenting Salman Khan in all his glory, and he has been fully successful in that.

However, due to a weak and predictable script of the film, which is based on a very thin storyline, Prabhu Deva shows some signs of being handicapped.

The music by Sajid Wajid is average except the ‘Jalwa’ number, which has already been topping the popularity chart. The audiences would also enjoy the presence of Govinda, Anil Kapoor in the song number.

Shiraz Ahmed’s screenplay is average and it could have been better than this, although dialogues and one liners by Salman Khan seems to have made up for the deficiency. Action direction is superb. Cinematography lives up to the hype created by the flick.

STARDUST VERDICT

Salman Khan’s presence in his natural action avatar will ensure a terrific opening for the flick at the box office. The movie is a complete masala entertainer aimed at hoi polloi, who will throng to theaters during Eid vacation. However, the audience will have to leave their brains at home to enjoy this full on masala flick. A good fare.

Star Rating: 3/5
