Analysis :
It looked like Puri Jagannadh wanted to recreate the history of Pokiri with Ek Niranjan. Ek Niranjan however stands out to be an ordinary flick. The characterisation of Prabhas as Chotu was good but lacked freshness may be due to the routine diction of him or the similar dialogues used by Puri in most of his movies. The Bollywood beauty was a total misfit as a heroine in the movie. The first half of the movie was pretty decent with good songs and introduction of all characters of the movie. However the second half looses grip and the story turns out to become quite obvious. Another draw back in the second half is the comedy track of Brahmanandam and Ali as Mantra Tantra which tests the nerves of audience. Music by Manisharma is really good, both the songs and background score of the movie came really well. Cinematography by Shyam.K.Naidu is decent. Editing by MR Verma was ok and could have been better. Overall the movie lacks the pace and tempo of an action entertainer. Even the action episodes turn to be just average.
Story :
Veeraiah's (Thanikella Bharani) younger son is stolen by Sadanand (Mukul Dev). He names him as Chotu (Prabhas) and makes him beg on streets to earn money for him. The police raid Sadanand and Chotu helps the police to find him. The police reward Chotu for helping them. From then on Chotu works for the police and catches hold of criminals whom the police are in search of. While getting hold of a goon, Chotu comes across Sameera (Kangana) who is a guitar teacher. Sameera is the sister of the goon who works for Johnny Bhai (Sonu Sood). Chotu likes Sameera and they fall in love. Veeraiah's elder son Kailash also works for Johnny Bhai who will be arrested on charges of killing the minister which is planned by Johnny Bhai. Chotu is in constant touch with Sadanand and requests to tell the whereabouts of his parents. Johnny Bhai wants to kill Kailash who is arrested fearing that he will reveal his name to the police interrogation. Kailash escapes from the police clutches and Jhonny Bhai is in search of him. The police commisioner also asks Chotu to find Kailash and bag a handsome reward. Sameera's brother vacates his house and escapes to Bangkok fearing Jhonny Bhai. Chotu also goes to Bangkok in search of Sameera and finds Kailash there. Jhonny Bhai kidnaps Sameera and her brother and threatens to kill them if Chotu does not hand over Kailash to him. How Chotu manages to free Sameera from Jhonny Bhai and meets his parents is rest of the story.
Artists Performance :
Prabhas - Prabhas was appealing as Chotu and he did a good job in both action and romantic scenes. However his Bhimavaram slang looked stereotyped and lacked freshness.
Kangana - Kangana as Sameera was just ok. She lacked the necessary bubblyness and liveliness which the audience expect out of a heroine.
Sonu Sood - Sonu Sood as Jhonny Bhai was terrific. His characterisation suited his body language perfectly.
Mukul Dev, Thanikella Bharani did a decent job.
Brahmanandam and Ali played the spoil sport of comedy track with their Mantra and Tantra characters.
Sunil was limited to a few scenes in the second half but he was extremely good.
Posani Krishna Murali was routine with his screams.
Highlights :
1) Ek Niranjan title song came out really well.
2) Sonu Sood's characterisation as Johnny Bhai was excellent.
Negatives :
1) Brahmanandam and Ali's comedy track spoiled the tempo of the movie in the second half.
2) Bollywood babe Kangana was just ordinary as Sameera and lacked the grace of heroine in the movie.
3) Weak screenplay and storyline is another drawback of the movie.
Final Say : The much hyped movie Ek Niranjan does not meet the expectations of fans. Watch the movie if you are a die hard fan of Prabhas. Others can watch it on a weekend with out expecting anything great from the movie to avoid dissapointment from Prabhas-Puri combo.
